The Referendum to exit the Eu has claimed its first scalp.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has resigned.

Speaking on the steps of No 10 Downing Street Mr Cameron said the decision is not one he's taken lightly - but he believes it's in the national interest for him to step down:

A tearful Mr Cameron - his wife by his side - said the UK needed "fresh leadership" and that he had already spoken to the Queen about his decision.

David Cameron had campaigned to remain in the EU but the public rejected his arguments and chose to leave the EU by 51.9% to 48.1%.

Speaking to reporters outside Downing Street, the PM said he would aim to have new leader in place by the Tory party conference in October.
