The Taoiseach has thrown down the gauntlet to local authorities - telling councils it's now their job to make sure new homes are built.

Enda Kenny was defending the government's Action Plan for Housing, which has left out some recommendations from a special Dáil committee.

Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams says ignoring good ideas from the opposition undermines the idea of 'new politics'.

Adams said several key recommendations from the Committee on Housing and Homelessness were ignored, including a plan to peg rent increases to the rate of inflation, or a moratorium on repossessions.

But Kenny dismissed the appeals, saying the committee's recommendations were addressed in a special appendix - before then turning attention to local authorities who are now responsible for housing delivery.

The two locked horns in the Taoiseach's final session of Leaders' Questions for this term, where the Taoiseach also faced questions over the funding of higher education, an EU-Canada trade deal, and the economy of the south-east.
