The issue of pay parity is dominating teachers’ conferences this week with demands for equal pay for equal work.

Around 1,800 delegates of the three teachers unions, are attending annual conferences in Wexford, Cork and Killarney.

Teachers across the three unions say they will fight for equal pay for those new to the profession.

Delegates have heard that a newly qualified teacher will earn €300,000 less over their 40-year career compared to their longer serving colleague.

With no Government or Minister of Education, it looks like teachers could be manning the picket line in autumn.

We're joined by Orlaith Foley – Newly Qualified teacher, Carl O’Brien - Education Editor for Irish Times and Peter Mullen of the Irish National Teachers Organisation.
