Health Minister Simon Harris wants to improve the food being served in our country's hospitals. He has asked all the hospitals to send him their menus to see what patients are being fed.

According to the Daily Mail, Minister Harris will study the menus and work with professional chefs to create healthier options.

The health watchdog Hiqa is currently working on a plan to get rid of unappetising meals from hospital wards.

However, dietitian Sara Keogh cautions against a knee jerk reaction to the issue of hospital food. "Sometimes, high calorie content is precisely want people in hospital require to aid their recovery. They’re sickly, recovering, may not be feeling very hungry, so a big fry up might be exactly what they need. You can’t apply healthy eating guidelines across hospitals. You have to be aware that different patients will have different requirements"
