Tens of thousands march for reproductive choice in Dublin

Major demonstrations are taking place in Dublin and internationally this afternoon calling for the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.

Tens of thousands of pro-choice campaigners are currently en route from the Garden of Remembrance to Leinster House, many wearing the distinctive black and white sweaters with word 'Repeal'.

Organisers claim Ireland has failed to live up to the ideals of equality enshrined in the 1916 Proclamation by denying women access to free, safe and legal abortion in Ireland.

The theme of this year's march is rise and repeal - with protesters calling for a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment - the article in the constitution which gives equal right to life to a fetus as to a pregnant woman.

These people at today's demonstration explained why they're marching:

 

A citizens' assembly on the issue of the 8th Amendment, is due to be convened by the Government in the coming months.

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone, who's taking part in today's March for Choice, thinks the Government is strong enough to deal with the issue of abortion:
