Revenue seize of 22,000 cigarettes

Customs Officers have seized over 22,000 cigarettes worth more than €10,000 euro in an operation in Limerick yesterday.

Officers discovered two steel containers, each concealing over 11,000 'Septwolf' brand cigarettes, when they stopped and searched a vehicle at the Limerick/Cork border yesterday.

In a follow up search at a house in Limerick city a number of items including mobile phones, a tablet PC, and documentation were also seized.

A number of Chinese nationals have been questioned and according to Revenue the investigation is on-going with a view to prosecution.

The agency says the cigarettes represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of €8,100.
