Donors asked to tell families of their wishes

A record number of organ transplants was carried out last year, with 294 transplants taking place.

This weekend sees the start of organ donor awareness week – and the public’'s being urged to get an organ donor card, and speak to their families about their wishes.

Chief Executive of the Irish Kidney Association Mark Murphy says medical advancements have led to a surge in the number of transplants, while the number of deceased donors stayed the same;

While the first step in becoming an organ donor is getting and carrying an organ donor card, it's also important to have a conversation with your family to let them know of your wishes.

Mark Murphy says you're much more likely to need an organ, than to ever die and donate one;
