The number of people killed in yesterday's motorway bridge collapse in Italy has now risen to 39.

Two families and at least three children are among the dead.

Sixteen people are being treated in hospital.

Searches are continuing for any survivors and hundreds of people have been evacuated from nearby homes as a precaution.

A 50 metre-high section of the A10 in Genoa collapsed yesterday, taking cars and lorries with it.

More than 300 firefighters have been involved in the search and rescue operation at the site.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney has said he's 'deeply saddened' at the events.

He said: "I want to express my condolences to the Italian Government and people, and especially to the families of those killed and injured in today’s horrific bridge collapse.

"My thoughts and prayers are with all those grieving at this very difficult time."

The Irish embassy in Rome has said it is aware of the incident, and offered phone numbers to help people concerned.
