The Taoiseach is to hold talks with the British Prime Minister in Dublin this evening.

As Theresa May faces increasing political pressure over the Brexit withdrawal deal, she'll meet with Leo Varadkar ahead of a European Council summit tomorrow.

Yesterday, Mrs May held talks the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to discuss "clear concerns" over the UK's Brexit withdrawal deal.

She's meeting EU leaders to try and "seek reassurances" on the Irish border backstop.

Speaking in Brussels, Mrs May said: "The backstop is a necessary guarantee for the people of Northern Ireland - and whatever outcome you want, whatever relationship you want with Europe in the future, there's no deal available that doesn't have the backstop within it.

"But we don't want the backstop to be used, and if it is we want to be certain that it is only temporary.

"And it's those assurances that I will be seeking from fellow leaders over the coming days."

But European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has warned there's 'no room whatsoever' for renegotiation of the withdrawal agreement.

"The deal we have achieved is the best deal possible - it is the only deal possible," he said.

"There is no room whatsoever for renegotiation."

A planned House of Commons vote on the agreement for today was scrapped, after Mrs May admitted that it wouldn't be passed by MPs.

As she continues to seek concessions from the EU, Mrs May also faces mounting political pressure in Westminster.

A leadership challenge could be launched if 48 Conservative MPs write letters saying she's lost their support.

British media outlets report that it's believed that number could be reached soon - although there was no confirmation over whether that was the case.
