Irish researchers have invented a new intelligent mouthguard to help prevent people from grinding their teeth.

Up to half a million Irish people suffer from the problem.

It can lead to severe facial pain and headaches, and can also damage dental restorations like crowns and veneers. 

A team of researchers from the Dublin Dental Hospital and the Science Foundation at Trinity College have come up with SmartSplint - a device that can record and monitor teeth grinding and feed the information back to a person's phone.

It's hoped SmartSplint will be launched in Ireland later this year and will be available in dental practices internationally in 2016.

Padriag McAuliffe is founder of Smart Splint - he says it will give invaluable information to dentists about grinding patterns
