Morrissey, Phil Collins, or Noel Gallagher?

Every Sunday we take a look at the artists making the news in the music press during the week.  It’s fair to say that there’s a definite pattern in the musicians who aren’t happy unless they're hogging the headlines, and this week is no different.

Our first contender is recividist attention seeker Morrissey.

The world’s most famous vegetarian has been given the dubious honour of having a meat sandwich named after him.

It follows his performance at the Riot Fest in Chicago last month, where food vendors were reportedly asked not to sell meat during his two-hour set.

However, one vendor called Puffs of Doom was not happy, and accused Morrissey bullying” small businesses – and trying to push “his views down the public’s throats”.

Puffs of Doom responded to the meat ban by naming a sandwich after the singer.

The ‘Pork Morrissey’, is made with pulled pork and four types of cheese.

Next in line for the title is Phil Collins.

Do you know who Phil Collins’ arch nemesis is?  No, we didn’t either.

It’s fellow grumpy old lad Paul McCartney – and this week Phil told the Sunday Times newspaper what his long-marinated beef was with Macca.

It began at a party in Buckingham Palace in 2002.

“McCartney came up with Heather Mills and I had a first edition of The Beatles, by Hunter Davies, and I said, ‘Hey, Paul, do you mind signing this for me?’” he told the Times.

“And he said, ‘Oh, Heather, our little Phil’s a bit of a Beatles fan.’

And I thought, ‘You f**k, you f**k.’ Never forgot it.”

Collins summed up the ex-Beatles’ attitude thus:  “I’m Paul McCartney and it must be very hard for you to actually be holding a conversation with me.”

And our final contender for Artist of the Week is Noel Gallagher.

Though he’s widely considered the smarter of the Gallagher brothers, it was reported during the week that Noel Gallagher turned down a chance to be on the original Trainspotting soundtrack.

As movie soundtracks go, it’s probably one of the coolest ever made.

It features Iggy Pop, Pulp, Blur, New Order and Lou Reed.

But Oasis didn’t want to be involved, because Noel thought Danny Boyle was making a film about train spotters – and that wasn’t cool enough for him.

Trainspotting 2 will be released early next year, it remains to be seen whether Oasis were considered cool enough to be included on the sequel’s soundtrack.

Who will Neil’s Artist of the Week be?  Tune in 11-1 on Sunday to find out.
