The Health Minister says An Bord Pleanala will have the final say on the fire requirements for the new national children's hospital.

It's after the hospital's board applied for an exemption from some of the conditions attached to the planning permission.

The hospital says patient and visitor safety is its priority and that it's already exceeded current regulations.

The new National Children's Hospital or Phoenix Children's Hospital as it's to be called, has applied for exemption from three fire safety conditions attached to the planning permission.

These include a more extensive sprinkler system and changes to a glass atrium.

The board's Project director John Pollack says these aren't necessary as they've already exceeded safety regulations.

It's estimated that implementing these additional measures could cost around 2 million euro but Health Minister Simon Harris has denied that they're trying to cut corners.

The hospital has been reassuring people that safety is their primary concern and that the application is simply part of the normal back and forth of the planning process.

It says it will go with whatever decision is reached by An Bord Pleanála, which is expected by the end of the year.
