There is an increase in the number of carers and people with disabilities at risk of homelessness.

That's according to Family Carers Ireland which has issued a 'scorecard', rating the government on it's National Carers' Strategy for 2017.

The report found that out of 42 strategic actions, 9 received no progress and three received a regressive score.

It said that 2017 did deliver some benefits for family carers but that many crucial services have not yet been improved.

These include, access to respite, the under-funding of homecare, an increase of carers and people with disabilities on the social housing waiting list and a reduction in homecare supports.

Family carers in Ireland provide 45 hours of unpaid care per week, saving the state €10 billion a year.

Young Dublin Mum Lynn Walsh gave up her job to care for her daughter who has Retts Syndrome, she says the government needs to do more: 'They have to take into consideration that we've given up all of our work and jobs and friends to care of our children. We're actually saving the government money instead of putting them into residential homes so they need to work with us and to help us get proper housing'.
