A special Cabinet meeting has been called for this morning to consider a draft Brexit withdrawal agreement.

Ministers will be briefed on the text that could break the current Brexit impasse.

Last night, senior Government officials briefed the Taoiseach, the Tánaiste, the Minister for European Affairs and the Finance Minister on the latest from talks between the EU and UK.

British Prime Minister Theresa May will convene her own cabinet this afternoon to get their backing, but Brexiteers are already urging ministers to reject it.

The DUP have already been critical of it saying if the agreement is similar to what's been reported it would be like "being handcuffed to the European Union with Brussels holding the keys."

So while negotiators may have signed off on the draft agreement, there's lots of work to be done to make sure it has a political lifespan.

It was earlier reported that  an agreement was reached between EU and UK negotiators on a text that deals with the Irish border.

The main points include one backstop to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland - which will be in the form of a temporary UK-wide customs agreement, with specific provisions for the North.

It's also understood the text has an agreed review mechanism.
