Ireland's topped a list of 25 countries for people who 'pre-drink' before a night out.

85 per cent of here say they have drink at home first - significantly higher than the average rate of 63 per cent.

Details of the survey of more than 65-thousand people including 18-hundred Irish adults have been published in the Drugs and Alcohol review.

It found that social factors play a big part in whether we pre-drink - 48 per cent of Irish adults are heavy drinkers and there is a link between this and the fact 85 per cent pre-drink.

The price of alcohol in shops compared to bars and clubs also plays a role - reflected by the fact that Norway has the second highest rate at 80 per cent, with the UK next at 75 per cent.

Researchers found that pre-drinking rates are lower in countries where a drinking culture isn't as prevalent - 67 per cent in France and as low as 51 per cent in Italy.

Alcohol Action Ireland says the results are worrying and that drinking to excess can lead to serious health complications. It says that regardless of where people choose to drink, the message is to drink responsibly.
