Irish American gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger has been found dead in a federal prison.

The 89-year-old was found unresponsive at a high-security penitentiary in West Virginia.

Reports say he was killed - but officials have just confirmed his death and say no staff or other inmates were harmed.

Bulger was the leader of South Boston’s notorious Winter Hill crime gang, and in 2013 he was convicted of 11 murders.

He was also accused of 19 murders which took place in the 1970s and 1980s, and witnesses said that he “did all the dirty work” himself.

Johnny Depp portrayed Bulger in the 2015 film Black Mass.
