Junior Sport Minister To Meet FAI Over Ref Attack

The Junior Minister for Sport is set to meet with the chief of the FAI later today to discuss the alleged attack on a soccer referee in the midlands.

Brendan Griffin and CEO John Delaney are meeting to discuss the incident which happened on Sunday.

Daniel Sweeney underwent surgery on a suspected broken jaw and other facial injuries in the incident.

It happened after a match between Horseleap FC and Mullingar Town.

Minister Griffin says he will raise the issue of referee welfare at the meeting.

Gardaí in Tullamore are investigating the alleged assault.

Minister Griffin says "the message must go out to all that there is no place for violence in sport. I send my best wishes for a speedy recovery to the referee involved in the incident and hope that his love of the game is not destroyed by this distressing matter."
