A number of women who worked in the Magdalene laundries were wrongly refused access to a redress scheme.

That's according to a report which was issued after a number of survivors were denied access to compensation.

This report called 'Opportunity Lost' was issued after 27 women who lived in convents and laundries complained that they were denied access to the redress scheme announced by the then Taoiseach Enda Kenny in 2013.

The Department of Justice said it was because they had not lived in one of the 12 institutions covered by the scheme.

However, Ombudsman Peter Tyndall says evidence shows that some of the Magdalene laundries were wither physically linked to the units where the women lived or were located on the same grounds.

The report also criticises other aspects of the administration of the scheme

The Ombudsan has issued a number of recommendations to the Department of justice, including reconsidering applications, and guidance on any future redress schemes.

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan says his department will give full and careful consideration to all the recommendations included in the report.
