The New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the murder of a British backpacker there has brought 'hurt and shame' to the country.

A man's been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with killing Grace Millane.

Her body was found yesterday in an area of bush on the outskirts of Auckland.

Ms Ardern has apologised to the 22 year-old's family - saying she should have been safe there.

"My thoughts and prayers are with her father David who is in the country, her mother Gillian who cannot be here, and her wider family and friends and loved ones."

Her death comes just weeks after she had left her home in Essex, England to see the world.

After more than a month in South America she arrived in New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, on November 20th.

She was last seen entering a central city hotel with a man more than a week ago.

Police were called after her regular pattern of communication with family stopped.
