Nurses are to vote on whether they want to engage in all out strike action in a row over pay and staffing.

If passed, nurses and midwives would walk off the job for 24 hours and only provide emergency care for patients.

If the dispute remains unresolved, the INMO says two 24-hour stoppages would be held the next week.

Martina Harkin-Kelly is the President of the Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation.

Speaking at a press conference which was held this lunchtime she said "We have been forced down this path by government."

"We always as nurses and midwives consider our patients safety, and the current risk that our patients - that we care for within the health service - are  facing at this point in time."

The INMO's decision comes as 508 patients were waiting for beds in hospitals across the country today.

This morning there were over 30 patients on trolleys and chairs in 5 different hospitals.

The worst affected was University Hospital Limerick where 52 people were waiting for a bed.
