Irish children are expected to eat 5 million eggs this year!

A leading obesity expert says people should only eat 1 medium sized Easter Egg over the course of the holiday.

It comes as the Irish Heart Foundation reveals Irish children will munch through at least 5 million eggs next week.

Clinical Obesity lead for the HSE, Dr Donal O’Shea, advises against the extra large ones:

"If you take, for example, the 1kg Lindt bunny that has 1200 calories in it. That's a week's nutrition without any benefit in terms of vitamins or minerals. So that's going to cause trouble. It needs to be a medium-sized Easter egg."

Meanwhile, Dr O'Shea has has hit out at a charity partnership between Lindt chocolate and Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

The ‘Make Easter Sweet’ campaign is into its 12th year, with proceeds from the sale of chocolate bunnies going towards the Temple Street Foundation.

However, Dr O’Shea says it’s inappropriate that the hospital that runs the only childhood obesity clinic in the country partners with a chocolate brand.
