The remains of a Kilkenny woman who was murdered in 1984 have been examined and re-interred.

Marie Tierney's remains were exhumed early this morning as part of a cold case review into her violent death.

On the 22nd of October 1984, Marie Tierney's husband reported the mother of two missing.

She had left her home at Clinstown, Jenkinstown the night before in the family car.

Then, just before Christmas of that year her body was found in a ditch. The 34 year old had been strangled.

Her remains were exhumed in Kilkenny this morning.

Exhumations in Ireland are extremely rare and only happen in strict circumstances.

Her remains have now examined with the latest scientific developments and re-interned.

Over 500 lines of inquiry have been followed since 1984 and 200 statements taken -however there have never been any arrests.

Gardaí now hope this exhumation may lead them to Marie's killer.
