Several roads and bridges have been 'washed away' in Co Donegal after flooding.

The Inishowen Peninsula is reported to be among the areas hit by heavy rain last night.

The Muff to Greencastle road - a busy route - is among the roads worst affected.

Gardaí say people should not make unnecessary journeys - but they advise anyone travelling on back roads to slow down & expect delays.

AA Roadwatch reports several bridge collapses, while Grainne’s Gap remains closed following mudslides.

The majority of the water has now subsided, and the Council is expected to begin assessing the damage.

Several roads in Sligo and Cavan are also impassable this morning, while emergency services in the North reported an 'extremely busy night'.

Belfast Coastguard said: "Rescues ranged from people trapped in vehicles, houses and cut off by flood water."
