Robert Mugabe Resigns As Zimbabwe's President

Robert Mugabe has resigned as the president of Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe's parliament speaker made the announcement this afternoon, with jubilant scenes in the chamber in the wake of the news.

Mr Mugabe said he was stepping down voluntarily "to allow the smooth transfer of power".

The 93-year-old - who has been in power for 37 years - held his last cabinet meeting this morning, which just five ministers attended.

He had been urged to stand down by the army which took over key institutions last week.

The week-long political crisis had been sparked when the leader fired vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa - a decision seen as an effort to pave the way for Mugabe's wife Grace to succeed him as president.

Mr Mugabe had previously refused to step aside, despite being voted out as leader of the ruling party Zanu-PF.
