Police in Finland say two people have died after a knife attack in the city of Turku.

Six other people have been injured.

Police said on Twitter a man suspected of being the attacker was shot in the leg and arrested.

Multiple ambulances, fire engines, and police cars are attending the centre of the city, which is 90 miles west of Helsinki.

Finnish police recommend people avoid the area.

They said that security at Helsinki Airport and at train stations was being stepped up.

The Irish embassy in Helsinki say there are no reports of Irish people being caught up in the incident.

Anyone with concerns is being advised to call the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin on 01-4082-527.

The Finish Prime Minister Juha Sipila says his government is closely monitoring the situation.
