More than 6,500 Toyota cars in Ireland are being voluntarily recalled due to a potentially dangerous fault.

The car manufacturer has expressed concern over some of its models front passenger air bags.

Avensis, Corolla, Avensis Verso, Yaris and SC430 models which were manufactured between February 2001 and April 2006 are the affected vehicles.

Toyota says there's a risk the front passenger air bag inflators could rupture.

This happens after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.

If a rupture happened it could allow metal fragments to pass through into the vehicle interior at high speed, which could result in injury or death.

Toyota Ireland says it will be writing directly to affected customers to arrange an airbag inspection.

If required the affected airbag will be replaced.
