There’s been almost €17m of card fraud in the first half of the year.

People are being urged to be careful if they're buying online in the run up to Christmas.

It comes ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday which have become busy shopping days here.

December the 8th used to be the traditional Christmas shopping day but that’s now all changed with Black Friday and Cyber Monday now considered as the start of the festive shopping season.

A large number of people will be going online.

Sgt Kelvin Courtney says it’s crucial that shoppers use only trusted websites.

"Just take precautions - you wouldn’t do it in the physical world, so take precautions when you're online.

"Look for the padlock that says 'https' - that means that when you’re putting your financial details in, it's secure.

"If you can do that, it'll go a long way to protecting your cash".

A third of consumers use their mobile phones when shopping online.

But you need to be careful when doing this.

Niamh Davenport from Banking and Payments Federation Ireland explains.

"if you are shopping online using your phone, to use your 3G or you 54G connection rather than using public wi-fi or using public hotspots - cause they aren't actually securing your details"

We’ve already heard of skimming and phishing - but now there’s a new phenomenon called 'smishing' where people receive texts reportedly from large retailers - which are looking for your financial details.

And there's another new similar scam called twishing.

Detective Garda Jim O’Meara explains what this is.

"Phishing but by way of Twitter - so you get a tweet - again you're asked to follow a link within the tweet.

"Really the criminal organisations are moving with the times and moving with modern technology".

If you think you have been comprised online - the advice is to contact your bank and then your local garda station.
