Cohen, perhaps taking a lead from the late David Bowie released his final album, You Want It Darker, a month before his death at the age of 82.

With a long and accomplished career, the Montreal-born poet never enjoyed big pop single success but his songs such as "Hallelujah" and "Bird on a Wire" were covered by Jeff Buckley and Judy Collins respectively and are regarded as hits.

Inducting him into the Rock 'n' Roll hall of fame, Lou Reed said that Cohen was among the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters".

Michael Clifford of the Irish Examiner and "Journalist of the Year" and DIT School of Journalism head Kate Shanahan count themselves among Cohen's millions of fans.

They joined Matt to remember their fond memories of his music and his life.
