Strong winds are due to hit 17 counties tomorrow as Storm Ali approaches Ireland.

Met Éireann has a status orange warning in place from early tomorrow morning - with gusts of up to 120 kilometres an hour expected.

Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Clare and Kerry are all on alert.

Storm Ali will track close to the west and northwest coast from the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Status yellow wind warnings have also been issued for the entire country ahead of the storm's arrival.

People are being advised to drive with extra care and watch out for windblown debris.

Brian Farrell from the Road Safety Authority says people need to take care.

"What we really do need to be aware of in such conditions is the danger of being blown off course, and potentially into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

"That's why we'd also ask drivers to be aware of these conditions (and) the challenges vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians and motorcyclists will face in these conditions.

"And I suppose just to slow down - so that you are able to react in an emergency".
