Leo Varadkar says he wants to hold a referendum on the eighth amendment in the first half of next year.
He made the announcement at a press conference on the first of a three day trip to Canada.
Leo Varadkar discussed women's rights and abortion with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a press conference yesterday, with the Taoiseach announcing that he wants to hold a referendum on the eighth amendment in the first 6 months of next year.
The pair also discussed Brexit and the EU-Canada trade deal, with the Taoiseach describing the meeting as very good.
Afterwards, Varadkar told reporters that the invitation to Donald Trump to visit Ireland still stands and that he intends to visit The White House on St Patrick's Day.
Varadkar then marched with his partner alongside his Canadian counterpart in the Montreal Pride parade. Mr Trudeau said the Taoiseach was the first foreign head of state to take part in a pride event in Canada.
