Today is an important day for Ian Dempsey, as he marks 20 years on Today FM.

We joined in the celebrations on The Last Word and invited the King of Breakfast in for our Friday interview to look back on the highlights of his career.

Ian joined Today FM six months after it made the change from Radio Ireland. At the time, the station was "struggling but growing", and the original target audience for the breakfast show was around 60,000 — but it went on to surpass that.

Ian took a risk in moving to Today FM, as he had been established at RTE radio and television for a number of years. But he felt it was the right time for a new challenge and the excitement of coming in at the start of something.

"I liked the idea of stations that were set up to be commercial and I wanted to be part of that. I wanted to join a new team and get energised again."

Radio has changed a lot in the last 20 years, with more and more people turning to the likes of Spotify for their music needs. But Ian still loves the live element of the breakfast show and the sense of connection that it provides with the audience.

He also talked about the music he listens to, the impact of David Bowie's death (which he announced live on air), what he'd like to do if he went back to television, and revealed who is easier to work with: Zig and Zag or Mario?
