Donald Trump called off a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris on Saturday, which had been arranged to honour the more than 2,000 American soldiers buried there.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement afterwards, blaming the weather and poor visibility for the cancellation. She also said that the President did not want to cause traffic disruption in Paris.
The following day, Trump travelled to the Armistice commemoration ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe by limousine, rather than joining his fellow world leaders as they made their way on foot down the Champs-Élysées in the rain. Security issues were cited as the reason.
In a tweet which has since been deleted, Trump claimed he had suggested driving to the cemetery on Saturday as his helicopter was unable to fly due to the conditions, but that the Secret Service had prevented him doing so.
