It's being hailed as 'the best car invention since the seatbelt'

If new EU proposals are officially passed, all new cars could be fitted with speed-limiting devices from 2022 to ensure vehicles adhere to speed limits.

The technology, known as ISA (Intelligent Speed Assistance), uses cameras to tell the vehicle what speed it should be travelling at.

Drivers will only be able to break the speed limit (in case of an emergency) by holding their foot down hard on the accelerator.

The people behind the project claim that up to 25,000 deaths and a possible 140,000 injuries could be prevented with this new safety measure.

Today FM's Dermot and Dave take a look at the pros and cons of the plan.
