A new TV advert from the Road Safety Authority has received criticism for being too strong.

The ad features Noel Clancy, who lost his wife and daughter in a car accident in Cork in 2015 when they were hit by an unaccompanied learner driver.

The car flipped onto its roof and ended up in a canal-like drain. Rescuers were unable to open the doors in time and the occupants drowned. Noel Clancy had joined the rescue attempt without realising that the victims were his wife and daughter.

He has explained that he made the ad in order to highlight the risks involved in unaccompanied learner drivers taking to the roads, despite criticism from members of the public who claim the ad is unfair to the driver in question, who had been through the court system and paid the price.

Alison Healy and Karl Deeter discussed this and some of the other stories making the news in The Week Trending.
