Ireland suffer narrow defeat in Hockey World Cup opener

The Irish Men's Hockey team have suffered defeat in their first appearance at the World Cup in 28 years.

The Green Machine were beaten 2-1 against Australia in their opening Pool B encounter in India.

Blake Govers and Tim Brand got the goals for Australia. Shane O'Donogue was Ireland's scorer. It was a creditable performance from Ireland who were a match for the reigning World champions for much of the contest.

Ireland qualified for the World Cup only twice before their appearance at this tournament - finishing in 12th place on both occasions in 1978 and 1990.

They qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 2016 via the Hockey World League Semi-Finals and finished 10th place at the tournament.

In the same year Ireland won bronze at the EuroHockey Championships. Next up for Ireland in Pool B is a game with China on Tuesday before playing England later next week.
