The Rugby World Cup boots off tomorrow with Ireland’s hopeful campaign starting against the mighty Canadians on Saturday. Needless to say snugs and sitting rooms are going to be filled with rugger related banter and for many of us this is akin to sitting in on a shouty Elvish conference call.
So to help you fit in and be part of the ‘shouting at the screen’ shenangigans here are some ready to ruck expressions you can throw into the sonic scrum!
1. ‘Good Hands!’
When to use - You can pretty much bark this one out anytime a player has the ball in his hand.
When Not to use: When George Hook is talking
2. ‘Ah here that was forward!’
When to use – Use this one sparingly and only if you’re a player has tossed the ball ahead. Best to wait til you hear someone mumble it under their breath and then take ownership by outshouting them and tsking all over the shop.
When not to use – When an Irish play has thrown a forward pass or on being chatted up by a stranger.
3. ‘That’s not straight!!’
When to use – The lineout is the bit where both teams line up at the edge of the pitch and one of them throws the ball between them like a bride tossing a bouquet at a wedding only with less bloodshed. Calling this one is pretty simple but only do so if certain.
When not to use – If you’re in a gay bar
4. ‘Ah you’d miss Dricco out there’
When to use – Every 5 minutes if we’re losing
When not to use – If we’re playing a blinder.
5. ‘That Sean O’Brien is an absolute beast of a man’
When to use – It’s best to assume when the crowd in the pub go ‘Oof’ and wince that Sean O’Brien has done something terrifying to get the ball.
When not to use – When you’re in the toilet cubicle of the pub.
