Sinead O'Connor isn't one to shy away from controversy, whether its her recent open letters to Miley Cyrus, her unanticipated appearance on After Dark back in the '90s or this (which happened 22 years ago today), tearing up an image of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live in the US.

The singer did it as a protest over sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. The incident happened just as O'Connor ended her live performance of Bob Marley's 'War' and out of nowhere, produced a photograph of the Pope, which she ripped to pieces and then threw at the camera.

Unsurprisingly, the audience was silenced by the act and the station went straight to an ad break. NBC claim they had no prior knowledge of what O'Connor was going to do, but they were fined $2.5 million dollars by the US Federal Communications Commission.

Watch it happen here.
