There has been a surge in patients who are dodging waiting lists by availing of free medical treatments in other EU countries.
New figures from the HSE show that spending on the EU Cross Border Health scheme increased by 350% in the last year.
1,738 Irish patients benefited from the scheme last year, with 40% receiving treatments in Northern Ireland. Poland was the next most popular destination.
Citizens also received treatments in Austria, Spain, Estonia and Latvia.
Under the scheme, Irish citizens can avail of healthcare procedures in other EU countries - and the HSE must cover the cost.
The figures were released on foot of a request by Fine Gael MEP Brian Hayes.
“Travelling to another EU Member State for medical treatment should be the last option for patients waiting for procedures. However, the EU Cross Border Healthcare Directive is a good example of EU collaboration for patients who need urgent treatments,” said MEP Hayes.
