Four children are in a serious condition in hospital following an assault in County Wicklow.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to a house in Blainroe, about 4km south of Wicklow town, at about 7.30pm last night.

There they found the four children in a serious condition. 

All four were taken to Tallaght Hospital. Two of them were airlifted.

A man in his mid 30's was arrested a short time later.

He's being held at Wicklow Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.
