Almost a third of people in Ireland think the country is "anti car", while the vast majority of people believe the Government should build more motorways.

They are some of the findings of new research on attitudes to car use in Ireland.

A survey of 1,200 adults aged 18 and over was conducted across the country by Amarach Research.

It found 72% of the public want the government to reverse the excise duty increase on fuel, and even more car owners at 76%, want the measure reversed.

The vast majority are against the decision to pause road upgrades with 60% wanting the government to build more motorways.

Some 41% of car owners would be encouraged to give up their car if there was more reliable and frequent public transport.

30% of people in Ireland think the country is anti-car, with 33% of car owners of the same opinion.
