AirBnB will make free hotel rooms available for victims of domestic abuse who can't find space in a refuge.

There's been an increase of nearly two fifths in the number of calls to the Women's Aid helpline since the Covid-19 pandemic began. While there's been a 25 percent reduction in capacity in domestic violence specialist accommodation because of the need to ensure safe social distancing and to allow for isolation units if needed.

The short-term letting company will work through its hotel partners to provide the temporary accommodation, free of charge. All those accommodated will be supported by domestic violence specialists.

Catriona Gleeson, from Safe Ireland, says it's not a long term solution, however.

"It's a very welcome temporary measure. But by no way to be interpreted as being the longer-term solution and it's only going to be suitable for a number of women. But we really welcome the leadership of Airbnb in this project and others that made it happen."

Jean Hoey, Public Policy Lead for Airbnb in Ireland says the company is proud to support the work of Women's Aid and Safe Ireland.

“In recent months throughout the pandemic, most of us have been confined to the safety of our homes. For those in abusive situations however, that environment can feel more like a prison. We are proud to support the heroic efforts of Women’s Aid, Safe Ireland and local frontline services by offering temporary safe havens for survivors right across the country.”
