A China Eastern Airlines plane carrying 123 passengers has crashed in southern China.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said the Boeing 737 was travelling from Kunming to Guangzhou.

It said there were 123 passengers and nine crew on board. Earlier, state media said there were 133 people on board

The plane came down in a mountainous region near the city of Wuzhou in Teng county.

The crash led to a major fire on the mountainside and a fire department official told local news there was no sign of life among the debris.

China's People's Daily said 117 rescuers had arrived at the crash site, with 650 more on the way from Guangxi Fire Department.

FlightRadar24 was tracking the flight at an altitude of 3,225ft with a speed of 376 knots, when it lost contact.

It showed the plane had rapidly lost speed after 2.20pm before entering a sharp descent.

NASA satellite data showed a huge fire in the area where the plane went down.

The website for China Eastern Airlines was later changed to be in black and white, which airlines do in response to a crash as a sign of respect for the victims.

Boeing's China website also switched to black and white.
