A man and a woman in their 50's have been taken to hospital with minor stab wounds after the incident
Gardai were alerted to this incident at a house on St Mary's Road in Cork at half past 4 this morning when a a woman rang Gardai to alert them that her partner was holding his family hostage in the house.
The man had told his partner that Gardai were going to be confronted by a horror scene when they arrived at the house as he was going to harm his mother and his mother's partner.
Gardai arrived at the scene with a trained negotiator and sought to engage with the pair.
Shortly before 9am, they made a decision to make "a hard entry" and armed members of the Regional Support Unit smashed down the front door.
The men had barricaded themselves upstairs with their mother and her partner, but during discussions agreed to release her and she was brought to safety.
However the men refused to release the other hostage and began throwing gas cyclinders and dumbbells down the stairs at members of the Regional Support Unit.
Officers managed to make their way up the stairs and used a Taser to subdue and arrest the men.
The two hostages suffered non-life threatening stab wounds and were taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.
The two brothers are being held at Mayfield Garda Station.
