The cabinet will meet again this morning to try and decide whether to appeal the Apple tax ruling.
But there remain question marks about whether all independent ministers will agree to appeal the European Commission ruling.
Independent members of the cabinet spent yesterday meeting with the attorney general, legal advisors, and each other.
And while the mood music last night pointed towards an agreement being reached today, it’s still not certain that the cabinet will have a full agreement.
The most likely outcome is that there will be an agreement to appeal the European ruling, in exchange for recalling the Dáil to pass a strongly worded motion on the subject.
But as of last night there WAS not a firm and conclusive position.
Irrespective of whether the tax ruling is legally sound, some independents remain concerned about the morality of supporting Apple in trying to avoid taxes.
Within 15 minutes of the ruling being announced Michael Noonan had indicated Ireland would appeal.
But if Fine Gael fails at the second attempt to bring its independent colleagues on board, the government’s future is far from certain.
