Voters will be asked in May to reduce the waiting time for a divorce to two years.

Cabinet Ministers will this morning approve the outline of the referendum on divorce.

It will remove the reference in the constitution to a minimum living apart period for separated couples.

Instead the time limit will be decided by the Oireachtas, with the proposal being to lower it from four years to two.

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has previously said that the changes would reduce the "trauma" for families who face long delays and excessive legal bills under the current system.

In the decade between 1997 and 2017, the number of divorces in Ireland jumped from 95 to 3412, but despite this increase, Ireland still has one of the lowest divorce rates in Europe.
