The costs of internet crime to the Irish economy is estimated at over 600 million euro.

An analysis conducted by Grant Thornton shows notifications of security breaches rose by 36 per cent in 2012.

The most common types of crime include identity fraud, online scams, theft and extortion.

Grant Thornton estimates that 55% of cybercrime activity is the work of international organised crime gangs typically operating in countries where regulation is weak.
