The future of the Tánaiste hangs in the balance after Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin expressed no confidence in Frances Fitzgerald.

Earlier, Sinn Féin announced it was tabling a no confidence motion. 

Fianna Fail tonight said it could no longer support Frances Fitzgerald either, after her handling of the latest controversy around Maurice McCabe.

The former Justice Minister has been under mounting pressure to explain her handling of an email detailing a Garda strategy to smear Mr McCabe.

If Fianna Fáil withdraws its support for the Tánaiste, it could trigger a general election.
