Another prominent member of Fianna Fail is quitting the party.

Fingal councillor David McGuinness has resigned, six weeks after failing to be selected to run in the general election in Dublin West.

The 28-year-old, a FF councillor for six years, has already fought two by-elections in Dublin West - coming second each time, to Labour's Patrick Nulty in 2011 and the Socialist Party's Ruth Coppinger in 2014.

However he's now resigned his membership of the party - criticising the leadership for failing to offer guidance to the country on significant issues.

And he says he can't rule out joining another group instead:

His resignation comes only a week after another young Fianna Fáil councillor, Kilkenny-based Patrick McKee, resigned his membership.

McKee also resigned just weeks after being overlooked for the party's nomination to run for the Dáil - when ex-TD Bobby Aylward was selected to run in next month's by-election instead. He has now joined Renua Ireland and will run for them instead.

McGuinness's departure is likely to mean further question marks over the leadership of Micheal Martin, and raise the stakes even further for the Carlow-Kilkenny by-election which the party is tipped to win.

If Aylward were to lose the by-election, Fianna Fáil would have lost all seven by-elections held in the lifetime of the current Dáil - a disappointing performance, by any measure, for the largest opposition party in the current Dáil.

Resigning today, Councillor McGuinness fired a parting shot to the party leadership - saying they were not addressing the real concerns of everyday Irish people.
