Mad Men - House of Cards and the transgender comedy Transparent have taken the top nominations for the Emmy Awards.

The hit fantasy series Game of Thrones secured the most nominations - it was shortlisted in 24 categories.

British show Downton Abbey has picked up its 50th Emmy nomination.

It's been selected for Outstanding Drama Series along with Game Of Thrones, Homeland and Orange Is The New Black.

Downton actors Jim Carter and Joanne Frogatt also got nods in the best supporting actor and actress categories.

And Wolf Hall and The Honourable Woman will battle it out in the Outstanding Limited Series section.

The awards take place in Los Angeles in September.
