94 percent of middle-ranking gardai say they've had difficulty enforcing Covid-19 legislation as the lockdown has unwound.

That's according to a survey of 2,000 members, conducted by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors.

Gardaí are also confused about how to enforce laws surrounding alcohol. They say they don't know whether it's liquor licensing laws or health regulations they're supposed to enforce at the moment.

It comes amid scenes of large crowds drinking on the streets in Dublin City Centre last weekend.

AGSI General Secretary Antoinette Cunningham says Gardai inspecting pubs still don't know what their role is:

"Our members are confused when asked to inspect licenced premises.  Are they inspecting it for breaches of liquor licencing laws or they doing checks of sanitation, the social distancing being applied, the PPE of staff etc?"

"What we're saying is guidelines need clear instruction. Members need to be trained in them and if they're being asked to police something, clear guidelines as to what is required should be set out for them"
